Cheap Christmas Gifts Can Be Great

28 Nov

An increasing number of people are struggling financially this year, with economic problems facing many parts of the world.

Financial concerns can put a real strain on individuals, families and relationships. A lack of money can leave us worrying about many aspects of our lives.

These strains can actually become more evident during the Christmas period. This time of year should provide a happy experience, allowing us to spend time with our families. We should be able to smile and make the most of the great company.

But it’s not always easy to do this if we have real financial concerns.

Financial worries at Christmas

We may be worried about many aspects of life at this time of year. With expectations that the dinner table should be full of food, drink and luxuries, we may feel under a considerable degree of pressure.

We’ll also want to buy gifts. These can be expensive and we may be dreading the thought of getting into debt in order to provide the quality of gifts that we would like to give to the usual recipients.

If it all seems too much to deal with then the best approach is often to tackle things in a direct manner. Don’t allow the pressure to build without doing something about it. A problem can often be reduced or avoided completely if you’re prepared to deal with it at the earliest opportunity.

An honest approach

So you could simply talk to your family and friends. Let them know that you won’t be able to buy them massive, luxurious presents this year. They’re sure to understand, once you make it clear to them that you simply don’t have as much money as you would like.

You can either explain that you won’t be sending gifts this year, or maybe even let them know that you’ll be reducing how much you spend. By taking this direct, honest approach, you can avoid confusion at Christmas. People won’t be left wondering if they’ve done something to offend you.

You’ll find that your loved ones are likely to be incredibly understanding about your situation. Most people have encountered money worries at some stage of their lives and know how it feels.

Cheaper options

If you are intending on getting some gifts then you’ll probably want to look at how you can save money. There are some excellent options available if you want to reduce how much you are spending. Creative gift ideas might include:

  • Providing a hamper of homemade products, such as cakes, biscuits and treats
  • Using your skills to make clothes, ornaments, or jewellery
  • Offering a voucher, entitling them to some of your time for babysitting
  • Offering to cook them a meal

As you can see, it’s perfectly possible to provide some wonderful gifts at minimal cost. You don’t have to spend a massive amount of money. In fact, many of the best presents are about being thoughtful and thinking about what the recipient really wants.

Extravagant gifts can certainly be fantastic, but they are by no means necessary.

Don’t feel guilty!

A homemade gift can be just as good as a more expensive shop-bought alternative. You certainly shouldn’t feel guilty about providing a gift that has involved an enormous amount of care and attention.

Think creatively and you’ll come up with some brilliant gift ideas this Christmas.

The Importance Of Financial Planning

14 Oct

Some people think of financial topics as being incredibly dull. But most of us would agree that getting our finances in order can have a significant impact on our lives.

There’s nothing worse than feeling like you don’t have enough money to do all of the things that you like. This can be incredibly frustrating. You may find that you start to feel like life is getting you down.

If you’re in a situation where you can’t seem to afford a vacation, a new car, or the chance to start your own business, then maybe it’s time to consider doing some financial planning.

Never have any money?

When people say that they simply don’t have enough money, it’s often the case that their outgoings are out of control. This may not seem particularly logical. More often, people blame their lack of money on their income levels.

So we might complain that we can’t afford a vacation because we don’t earn enough. In reality, the problem is more likely to be that we’re spending too much.

Start recording monthly spending

So how can you deal with this issue? Your first step should be to look at the scale of the problem. You may be surprised to find that your outgoings are higher than you had previously envisaged.

In order to calculate how much you are spending, a good start is to create a simple spreadsheet. Now enter the details of your income and how much you spend each month.

Don’t forget to include absolutely everything. This means rent, mortgage payments, utility bills, taxes, entertainment costs. Don’t leave anything out.

Once you’re finished, you may be surprised to see just how much you are spending. If your expenditure is higher than your income then you’ve clearly got a problem.

Dealing with your spending

Your next step should be to cut down your spending levels. There are various different approaches that you can take to this. Some people like to look at every single item of spending and see how much they could be saving on each.

This is a good technique if you’re able to be very thorough, although it’s not right for everyone.

You may prefer to set yourself a target. That might be something like “saving up for a vacation in the next 3 months”. In the case of this example, you would work out how much you want to spend on your next vacation. Now divide that total by 3. The result is how much you need to save each month.

In other words, you’ve given yourself a figure to aim for. That’s how much you need to reduce your monthly expenditure if you want to get to your target.

Constant monitoring

As you can see, financial planning relies heavily on good monitoring. If you know how much you earn and how much you spend, you’ll be able to plan for weeks and months ahead.

You’ll be able to work out how you can get into a position to buy the products and services that you really want.

That’s why financial planning is so vital. It enables you to get what you want in life.
